7 Health Benefits of Cardamom and Recipes

July 11, 2013

Cardamom, a member of the ginger family, is most often used to flavor food in Indian cuisine and one of the key ingredients in Chai Tea. Scientific analysis of cardamom has revealed that cardamom is an excellent dietary source of limonene, a chemical usually found in the skin of citrus fruits. More studies have showed that consumption of limonene boosted antioxidant activity and increased consumption of cardamon can offer many health benefits. Here are 7 health benefits of cardamom and reasons why to add more cardamon to your diet:

1. Cancer protection-Cardamom has phytonutrients and essential oils in cardamom act as antioxidants, cleaning up free radicals and resisting cellular aging.

2. Lowering Blood pressure-As a diuretic and fiber rich spice, cardamom significantly lowers blood pressure.

3. Aid in digestion-Cardamon seeds reduce mucus buildup caused by heavier foods—especially rich desserts—and contain natural carminatives, which reduce gas. Cardamom is also alkaline, making it a natural antidote to acid.

4. Detoxification-Cardamom is a diuretic and will help the kidneys get rid of body toxins and excess fluids.

5. Anti-inflammatory–Like ginger and turmeric, its relatives, cardamom has some anti-inflammatory properties that limit pain and swelling.

6. Cold and Flu–This spice is said to help prevent and relieve cold and flu symptoms.

7. Blood Clots–Cardamom is said to help prevent blood clots by preventing platelet aggregation.

I do love the scent of cardamon, although I haven't used it much except in Indian recipes. Going to have to start using it more given all the health benefits!

Also, most local captains have great stories to tell about the history of the islands. A small trailer is an option for those who have the capability of towing. Later on, people feel great when they see their pictures.
